About the Internship

  • Company - Lear Corporation
  • Industry - Manufacturing
  • Role - HR Intern
  • Location - Pune
  • Duration - 2 Months

How was your overall experience?

It was typical manufacturing set up and culture. The rules were pretty much in place and everyone was expected to follow them strictly. The good thing was that the leadership took the responsibility of showing how important it was in following rules in such a setup, especially in factories. And that is where my respect for them grew. Punctuality was of paramount importance to all, and we made sure we were never a second late. A 9-6 job meant it was a 9-6 job. Work was fun. We had frequent deadlines, but we always adhere to them. And work was made easy because of how approachable everyone was, despite their busy schedules and seniority. They were all so welcoming and helpful and always had our backs. One of the best experiences I had was when the Talent Acquisition Head for Asia Pacific visited us for a week. We learned that she had represented her country at the Olympics. What a great person, and what a great mentor! She inspired us all to be much better versions of ourselves, not just at work, but as humans more importantly. Those 8 weeks flew by quickly. But those 8 weeks gave all is interns a lifetime worth of valuable experience and lessons.

How was the selection process conducted?

The selection process of Lear Corporation was smooth and student-friendly while being sufficiently demanding at the same time. It was designed to test students on various parameters such as functional knowledge, soft skills and body language, and was conducted in stages. The first stage was that of a GD, band the second stage was that of Personal Interaction It was fair and transparent.

What was your project and how did you execute it?

As an HR intern, I was expected to work for the improvement of organizational effectiveness and efficiency. I was expected to figure out and present the entire organizational structure for Lear India comprising 1000 employees, catalogue their roles, make JDs for the mapped roles and devise balanced scorecards for the employees. Along with that, I had to document the employee value proposition of the company as well. The project required me to network extensively with people from all departments, I had to interview departmental heads and get my work reviewed not only by the HR director, but by the directors of Finance, Operations, JIT, and Sales too.

How was the work culture at Lear Corporation?

It was a typical manufacturing sector culture.

What were the key challenges that you faced during your internship?

The most difficult part was interaction with employees, especially senior management. Given the massive role of their jobs and roles, they had very little time to spare and scheduling meetings with them to know more about the organization and the roles of the different departments was challenging.

What were the key learnings of your internship?

Work at every level counts. Most employees believe the HR doesn’t interact with other employees, but I learned that given the time, they are very welcoming to it, and will help you with everything they’ve got.

Any memorable moments from the internship?

Impromptu Pizza party plan with colleagues and other interns.🍕

Any tips you would like to share with our juniors?

Do not fret about not knowing what work to do, I didn’t know either. You will learn how to go about the task given to you. All you have to do is be ready to learn. Be inquisitive without being pestering, and you’re good to go!
